About the Chef:
Born in Lilburn, GA, Executive Chef Mitch Hammond is a Georgia boy, raised in the Gwinnett County area. He originally had ambition to become an artist, but switched his path and followed his passion for food...and boy is he passionate about food and his job.
Chef Mitch was classically trained at Le Cordon Bleu Atlanta through an intense one-year program. After learning the basics, he first took on a catering job, then did some prep work, washed dishes and worked his way up from there. After mastering every facet of the kitchen - dish, porter, prep, sauté, broil, garno, sous chef, chef de cuisine, he is now the Executive Chef at Uncle Jack’s Meat House in Duluth.
Favorite Culinary Memory:
His favorite culinary moment is getting the job at Uncle Jack’s. Shortly before the restaurant opened, he approached Willie Degel, Uncle Jack’s owner and well known Food Network star for hosting Restaurant Stakeout, and convinced him that he was the man for the job. Ever since, “Willie took me under his wing and has taught me so much about the restaurant business. He’s pushed me to be better, to be on the cooking edge, and adapt to what the local area drives,” says Chef Mitch.
What I’ll be Tasting at Good Taste GWINNETT:
Nueske’s thick hand-cut apple-wood smoked BACON served with house made peanut butter and chipotle maple glaze
On MY Bucket List:
Mitch would love to get to St. Thomas one day - buy a house and enjoy the scenery. Plus wants to travel - go to places off the beaten path and try all of the local foods from all over the world.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE:
“Love my team, love the patrons, love when people taste our foods and fall in love,” says Chef Mitch. It’s the ‘Wow Factor’ for people to come into the restaurant and say ‘this is the best meal ever’.
